The Project Brief: A Private Play City for Family Celebrations 

By opening up KixCity for exclusive private bookings for families and kids parties & school-start celebrations, families now have a dedicated indoor venue to hold these special events. Designing a playground of approximately 290 m² to offer enough variety of different play activities without overcrowding the venue was the central design question. Low-level exploration, imaginative role-play as well as physically active play had to be designed within the compact area of an indoor playground.

The three areas can be seen as three complementary zones. The Baby & Toddler Area provides a dedicated low-level play space for younger children, while the Role-Play Town introduces familiar city-style settings for imaginative play. The Multi-Level Soft Play Area is equipped with climbing, movement, sliding and exploration options and offers active play for children who want to do more than just play in one spot. Together, these zones create a private play city where different age groups can engage with activities suited to their abilities while families celebrate in one connected environment.

Three Play Zones in Approximately 290 m²

In terms of layout, the main multi-level soft play is sited at one end of KixCity. Role-play areas for shopping and other town centre scenarios are sited along one wall of the building, with the baby and toddler area at the opposite end of the venue. The baby area is designed as a separate play space with low-level steps and soft play to create a distinct offering from that of the main soft play area. The separate boundary helps distinguish the Baby & Toddler Area from the main active-play structure, creating a dedicated low-level play space for younger children.

A Role-Play Town with German-Language Details

Image 5 shows a role-play street with different stores like a supermarket, police station, and hospital. The children can play in these stores as if they were in a real supermarket and play out shopping scenarios or take on other community roles and play out their everyday lives in these environments. The façades of the stores and the corresponding props form part of the role-play town and are different from the soft play structure. Key storefront signs such as “Supermarkt,” “Polizei” and “Krankenhaus” are presented in German, adding local context to the Role-Play Town and reinforcing the city theme in Brühl.

Multi-Level Soft Play in a Compact Footprint 

The main soft play structure at KixCity features a tube slide and a ball pit as well as padded steps and play obstacles to descend through. A crawl tunnel of elevated length completes the offer of different physical activities. Instead of spreading out on the floor, the offer of play is developed vertically within the compact space of the main structure. Different levels are used within the structure to create a variety of different play activities. Images 2–4 show the soft play structure and its surroundings with blue and pink accents and city-style façades. The area is also equipped with the KixCity brand. The main structure is approximately 8.54 m x 9.76 m in size. The frame of the main structure reaches a height of around 4.2 m. The highest decorative element reaches a height of around 4.5 m. These values are based on the drawings and are not actual as-built measurements or verified building clear height.

From Design to Installation 

For the KixCity project the play areas were developed in detail based on the project's fixed dimensions, the city concept and required play functions. Upon completion of the design, the required equipment was prepared and manufactured as set out in the approved concept. In addition to the multi-level soft play, a variety of role-play storefronts as well as baby and toddler equipment were designed and manufactured for the project.

At the manufacturing stage, all necessary components to reproduce the approved design were created, such as padded play equipment, structural frames, slides, climbing walls, obstacles and decorative façades as well as thematic details. The role-play area was produced with location-specific German language signage such as “Supermarkt”, “Polizei” and “Krankenhaus” enabling the city concept to be transferred into the finished environment.

After production of the play equipment, the items were prepared for transport to the KixCity venue in Brühl, Germany. The items were delivered to the venue and installed in the approved design and configuration. The soft play components were connected together within the three designated play areas. The role-play store fronts were positioned along the side wall of the venue, forming part of the Supermarkt, Polizei and Krankenhaus Town area. The Baby & Toddler play components were set up at the opposite end of the venue within their own separate area using the lower soft play items, steps and padded play modules.

The entire city concept can be developed into a functional Indoor Playground, consisting of 3 play zones, when it is designed and installed in the given space.

Inside the Completed KixCity Playground

The finished KixCity playground consists of three different areas of play within the total space of the venue. The Multi-Level Soft Play Area is equipped with elevated crawl sections and padded obstacles to climb over, steps to descend down, a large ball pit and a long tube slide. The Role-Play Town is positioned along one side of the venue and contains the themed fronts of a supermarket, police station and a hospital. The Baby & Toddler Area is positioned at the opposite side of the venue and contains lower level soft play equipment and steps. The road graphics on the floor help visually connect the different play zones.City façades, blue and pink accents to the theming and KixCity branding can be seen throughout the three areas.

From the perspective of a project like Dreamland Playground, JumpingPoint is a very nice example of a trampoline park which is designed around different attractions. Such a project requires careful planning of attractions, layout, circulation, safety issues and the visitors’ flow through the facility.
